ITS Technology Study on Vehicle Carried Friction Warning device

By direction of the Swedish National Board for Industrial and Technical Development (NUTEK) ITS Technology has recently executed a study on new, reliable techniques for a vehicle carried warning system. Concurrent development work has been carried out at the university college of Dalarna, Sweden.

As a result, the university has been imposed two additional exam questions; A/ a study on the construction of an acoustic sensor for mobile detection of road status, and B/ the distribution of geographically related information to drivers.

The ITS study takes as a starting point that available techniques are already being part and parcel of a vehicle and can generate reliable data for frictional gauging and ice warning. A regular Automatic Brake System can, as an example, act as a sensor.

By making use of the Controller Area Network (CAN), a great number of signals can be instantly distributed to a suitable measuring system. In return, anti-skid warnings are distributed in advance to motorists all over the network.
